The term Decentralized Social (DESOC) embodies the principles of decentralization, transparency, censorship resistance, and user empowerment. Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology that provides a glimpse into a world where data ownership and control can be decentralized. Blockchain laid the foundation for decentralized systems and P2P networks like Bitcoin. As blockchain rose to prominence, visionaries began exploring potential applications beyond finance. One of those visions was to create a decentralized social network without central control. Early projects such as BitTorrent and Mastodon laid the foundation for decentralized social networks with a focus on file sharing and microblogging, respectively.
